Free English classes for the rakyat

New Straits Times

PUTRAJAYA, 28 OCTOBER 2015 - From next year, free English classes will be held at government facilities, including urban transformation centres to arrest the declining standard of English in this country.

Treasury secretary-general Tan Sri Dr Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah said: "These classes would be conducted by retired English teachers working together with non-governmental organisations."

"Working people, children and even housewives can sign up for these classes to learn English," he told reporters at a post-budget briefing today.

Irwan said: "The government had identified places to hold these classes. They include at UTCs and in low-cost housing areas."

This was one of several measures to improve English proficiency, he said: "Adding that although it was not mentioned in the 2016 budget, it would be implemented. "
